Star Wars Battlefront II : The Force Is Strong, But Is It Strong Enough

Star Wars Battlefront 2 fills the 30 year gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens and will be canonized  in Star Wars lore.
Director Mark Thompson of EA Dice brought together a great team to develop this title.
  • Motive Studios, led by Assassin's Creed Jade Raymond
  • Criterion Games, known for Burnout and Need for Speed
  • and best of all Lucasfilm's story group, who control the lore of the Star Wars franchise
The combination of all these talents is a great feat and was hailed by Director Mark Thompson.
The reboot of Star Wars Battlefront in 2015 was lacking and disappointing in that it had no real campaign and the multiplayer side, which it really focused on, was often repetitive and simplistic in several areas.
From what we have learned there will be tons of depth inserted into the game as it moves along.
Starfighters, playable heroes and even soldiers will have all player progression. Playable heroes we know about will include Yoda, Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker and Darth Maul.
Seeing though that Ea Dice is boasting that this game will span "all era's" and is filling in the 30 year gap we expect to also see  Han Solo, Princess Lea and other iconic characters from the Star Wars lore.
The locations from what we have learned will cover areas such as Starkiller base, Hoth, Tatoonie, Yavin 4 and the Moon of Endor for now.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 Campaign
The lack of space battles, or of any vehicular batlles, in the 2015 Battlefront, was to say the least, dissapointing, if not appalling, to this Star Wars fan.
Criterion Games though should turn that around in many aspects.
Criterion are famed for their games Need for Speed and Burnout, both of which, I must confess, I spent way too many hours in the Burnout series and the earlier Need for Speed series as well.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 Space Battles
Criterion has been given the job of building the vehicular combat system and are doing so by building the system from the ground up.
Starfighters will have their own progression tree and customization.   If this holds true the more you move your vehicle up the faster and more powerful it will become.
With Criterion at the helm of the vehicle combat Starfighters will have improved handling, weaponry and combat options which will all be enhanced as you progress.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 Inferno Squad
What really improves Star Wars Battlefront 2 is the campaign. That failure alone cost EA Dice dearly with their reboot of the 2015 Battlefront.
Here you will take on a different aspect as you will see the battle from the Empire's side.
"We wanted to create a campaign that told a story we haven't seen before in Star Wars. It was important for us to tell a new authentic story, one that gives players a brand-new perspective. By putting players in the boots of an elite member of the Imperial forces, we can show them what the battle was like from the other side."
Director Mark Thompson
Iden Versio Inferno Squad
Here the featured character is Iden Versio, leader of Inferno Squad, a special forces Imperial soldier, who vows revenge on the Rebel Alliance after they blow up the the second Death Star around the Moon of Endor.
Playing for the "dark side" is a new twist in the Star Wars games.
"Who are the elite soldiers on the battefield who strike fear into the rebels? Who are the elite pilots that kids growing up (as citizens fo the Empire) look up to and aspire to be?"
" We present the other side of the conflict"
Director Mark Thompson
With that it will be different playing for the "dark side" of the force after fighting them for all these years in other Star Wars games. The challenge to bring this side of the story is one that EA Dice seems to be up to.
Star Wars Millenium Falcon
Star Wars Battlefront 2 will also host an offline co-op mode.
The co-op mode will allow split screening to play with your friends from the comfort of your couch and will be exclusive to consoles only. There you will be able to earn customization rewards and transfer them to the online multipalyer battlefield.
This is however taken with a grain of salt as it is spoken as an "offline" event. This would be more appealing to have the ability to play online also.
There is a disturbence in force. For now there will not be a season pass for Star Wars Battlefront 2.
"We don't have a season pass. We decided on that, and it's one of those difficult decisions because it has so many implications all around," Bernd Diemer, Battlefront II Creative Director at DICE said to Mashable. "When we looked at the way Battlefront had evolved over its lifetime, with the DLC and everything, we decided, 'You know what? For this type of game, season passes are not the best thing. We need to [take it apart] and come up with something better.'"
"We don't want to segment our community. I cannot talk about the specifics of this, but we have something different in mind that will allow you to play longer, be [more] invested in the game without having a fragmented community. The community is falling apart because there are simply not many people playing the different modes. So we definitely want to avoid that."
EA sent a statement to Mashable later -
"While we’re not ready to confirm any live service plans just yet, what we can say is this we heard the feedback from our Battlefront community loud and clear. We know they want more depth, more progression, and more content. So we’re focused on delivering that in every dimension of Star War: Battlefront II. We’ll have more to share about our plans soon."

So the question remains, we will have to buy DLC or has someone come to their senses that $60 for a standard edition is enough.
It would appear that the later will be the case as if they don't want to segment the community that will be their only choice, but only time will tell.

Inconclusion the game looks great. The hype sounds good, but will they be able to make up the difference from the floundering reboot of 2015?
So many fans were turned off with the final release. I myself found it to be a bit mundane after a while and a complete let down over all after playing the Star Wars franchise games back in the '80s before there were consoles and pretty much before alot of you readers were born.
There will be a playable version at EA Play starting June 10th. Reaction from that will gauge the game to some point.

As of now I am on the fence.
